Paul Chidlaw (American, 1900–1989) is a known mid-century American Abstract Expressionist artist. He worked with oil, watercolor, acrylic, etching, pastel, charcoal, and pencil.
Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio in 1900. He studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1919 to 1923. After his studies, Chidlaw worked as a designer for commercial films in Ohio. Chidlaw traveled to Europe and Africa. He studied at the l'École des Beaux Arts de Fontainbleu, Academie Collorosi, and Academie Grand Chaumerie in France. He studied under known artists like Andre Lhote, Jean Despujols, and St. Hubert de la Montagne. Chidlaw showed his art throughout Europe and all over the States. The Chidlaw Gallery in Cincinnati was named after the artist. In 1985, the Miami University Art Museum held a retrospective of Chidlaw's work. The artist died four years later in 1989.
