View Jean Puy Gallery of Works
Jean Puy (French, 1876–1960) was a French Fauvist artist. He studied architecture at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon and painting with Jean-Paul Laurens at l'Académie Julian between 1897 and 1898. Puy was born in Roanne, France on November 8, 1876. In 1899, he met Henri Matisse and other artists when he transferred to the l'Académie Carriere. He exhibited his work at the Salon des Indépendants in 1901 and the Salon d'Automne in 1905.
Puy developed a bright color palette based on his emotional interpretation of the world and his subjects instead of observed reality. Through his work was never as radical as some of the other Fauve artists, Puy's work maintained subdued tonal harmonies and a sense of three-dimensional form.
Jean Puy died on March 6, 1960 in Roanne, France. His paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, among others.
